Job summary

The Legal Aid Society’s Immigration Law Unit seeks a Staff Attorney to expand capacity for federal habeas, reviews, and APA actions, serving low-income non-citizens across NY. You will litigate, train, and collaborate with pro bono counsel to advance client rights in federal courts.

Ideal candidates hold NYS Bar admission, 2+ years of federal litigation experience (immigration preferred), and strong writing and organizational skills. Salary and benefits reflect a generous package.

Qualifications

• Admitted to the New York State Bar and eligible for immediate admission to the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second and Third Circuits and SDNY
• Minimum of two years of federal or comparable litigation experience, preferably in immigration law
• Commitment to representing or working with marginalized communities
• Excellent writing, analytical, oral advocacy, and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and on interdisciplinary teams managing a high volume of cases
• Ability to collaborate with pro bono attorneys and interns

Responsibilities

• Develop and conduct litigation before federal district courts and Courts of Appeals (Second/Third Circuits) including habeas petitions and Administrative Procedure Act actions
• Assist with class action lawsuits and other affirmative litigation for non-citizen New Yorkers
• Provide individualized consultation to staff attorneys
• Develop ILU staff skills on federal litigation through trainings
• Collaborate with pro bono counsel
• Create resource materials and trainings on federal court issues for pro se and pro bono respondents
• Maintain and update case files and the LawManager database
• Perform other duties as assigned
