Job summary
New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks a highly motivated Spanish-speaking Staff Attorney for a full-time position representing individuals in removal proceedings. The role requires proactive problem-solving, dedication to clients, and a strong commitment to due process and immigrant rights during challenging times.
The attorney will represent detained and non-detained immigrants referred by NYS partners and support NYIFUP with supervision from Brooklyn Defender Services and others,
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited school.
- Fluency in Spanish required.
- Minimum 2 years experience in removal defense; 4 years preferred.
- Excellent writing, speaking and organizational skills.
Responsibilities
- Represent immigrants in removal proceedings, detained or non-detained, including hearings, USCIS interviews and ICE check-ins.
- Screen clients for eligibility for relief and develop representation strategy.
- Prepare filings, affidavits, and memoranda for USCIS, Immigration Court and appellate bodies.
- Supervise interns, volunteers and pro bono attorneys as needed.
