Job summary

Violence Intervention Program, Inc. (VIP) in the Bronx seeks a compassionate Helpline Counselor to provide confidential, survivor-centered crisis support to callers experiencing domestic and sexual violence.

You will assess safety, explore options, and connect clients with services while honoring their choices and autonomy. You will conduct intakes, document interactions in Salesforce, and coordinate with VIP programs, shelters, and community resources.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
• Experience with crisis intervention or hotline counseling is a plus.
• Ability to provide culturally responsive, survivor-centered support.
• Understanding of needs of Latine and immigrant communities and communities of color.
• Strong verbal communication and organizational skills.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and learning client databases.

Responsibilities

• Provide crisis counseling, emotional support, safety assessment, and safety planning to Helpline callers.
• Conduct intakes and shelter screenings and connect callers with VIP programs, emergency shelter, and other resources.
• Respond to calls, voicemails, and referrals during assigned shifts and provide timely follow-up.
• Accurately document caller contacts, services, safety planning, and referrals in Salesforce and complete shift reporting.
• Maintain accurate records and communicate issues to the Helpline Manager.
• Participate in trainings and meetings and support other Helpline responsibilities as needed.
