Job summary

Shelter, Inc. is seeking a Bilingual Family Support Specialist to build trusted relationships with families, provide education, and connect them with community resources. The role involves long-term support up to five years, home visits, and screenings both prenatally and post-birth.

Responsibilities include linking families to services, promoting positive home environments, and helping them reach personal goals while ensuring vaccination, safety, and development milestones are met.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or an associates degree in early childhood education, social work, or a closely related field from an accredited school required; master's in social work or similar field and experience is desired.
• Infant mental health endorsement preferred.
• Experience with children and families; ability to establish trusting relationships.
• Fluency in English and Spanish required; strong written and verbal communication.
• Knowledge of infant/child development; willingness to engage in reflective capacity.
• Ability to work flexible hours; valid Illinois driver's license and automobile.
• CPR/Infant CPR and First Aid certification within six months; complete medical and TB tests; COVID-19 vaccination per CDC.
• Background check and transcripts submission required; lifting up to 40 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Conduct home visitation up to 5 years old per needs standards.
• Screen parents prenatally or after birth to determine service eligibility.
• Provide long-term supportive and educational services to parents.
• Help parents improve skills for a positive home environment.
• Assist families in problem solving and advocacy for children.
• Establish and achieve personal goals with families.
• Support medical home, immunizations, and well-child visits.
• Screen social-emotional/developmental milestones and refer to Early Intervention when needed.
• Provide parent-child activity opportunities to support development.
• Coordinate with community resources to meet needs and goals.
