Job description

REPORTS TO: Director of Compliance and Risk Management .

LOCATION: Remote

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Through a respectful, constructive and energetic style guided by the objectives of Allegiance Benefit Plan Management, Inc. (Company), the Benefit Plan Compliance Specialist assists with health and welfare benefits plan (e.g., medical benefits) compliance matters in a timely manner brought forward by Company clients and Company co-workers. This involves independent and thorough research with oversight by the Director of Compliance and Risk Management.

The incumbent is expected to communicate professionally with peers, supervisors, subordinates, vendors, customers, and the public, and to be respectful and courteous in the conduct of this position.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

Essential skills include the following.

  • Knowledge of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) provisions that apply to health and welfare benefits plans (e.g., summary plan descriptions).
  • Knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (Code) provisions that apply to health and welfare benefits plans (e.g., cafeteria plans, change in status events).
  • Knowledge of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provisions that apply to health and welfare benefits plans (e.g., preventive services, summary of benefits and coverage).
  • Knowledge of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) (e.g., qualifying events).
  • Knowledge of the application of Medicare to health and welfare benefits plans (e.g., coordination of benefits).
  • Knowledge of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) provisions that apply to health and welfare benefits plans.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

Essential job functions include the following. Other functions may be assigned as business conditions change.

  • Able to independently research compliance issues arising from the foregoing laws through the use of various research tools (e.g., Checkpoint, government websites).
  • Able to read and understand regulatory guidance (e.g., cafeteria plan regulations).
  • Able to review plan documents and summary plan descriptions regarding health and welfare benefits plans compliance matters.
  • Able to concisely answer questions in a readily understood manner with legal reasoning in a timely manner regarding any of the above laws and other laws that apply to health and welfare benefits plans.
  • Monitors for developments in the law that apply to health and welfare benefits plans.
  • Contributes to the daily workflow with regular and punctual attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education: College bachelor's degree required.

Minimum Experience: Computer experience required. A minimum of five years of previous health and welfare benefits plans compliance experience required.

Other Qualifications: Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

PC skills, including Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint. Must be able to adapt to software changes and trouble shoot minor issues.

Excellent listening skills.

Ability to show initiative.

High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

Ability to project a professional image and positive attitude in any work environment.

Ability to comply with privacy and confidentiality standards.

Ability to be flexible, work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Working knowledge of general office procedures.

Excellent detail skills, must be thorough and have good proofreading skills

Ability to prioritize, accomplish tasks in timely manner
