Job summary

Hawaii State Department of Education is seeking Behavioral Health Specialists to serve students across Hawaii District schools. Roles include assessment, planning and counseling to support student behavior and family functioning within school-based services.

Positions start at appropriate salary steps with eligibility for higher placement based on qualifications and funding. A Master’s degree in counseling, psychology or social work is required and licensure such as NCC is desirable.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, marriage/family therapy, psychology or social work.
• For graduates within six months, provide a letter attesting to graduation and official transcripts.
• Final official transcript showing receipt of degree must be submitted upon graduation.

Responsibilities

• Assess when and why a student engages in problem behavior using interviews, family input, school records and reports.
• Develop individualized behavior intervention/management plans with techniques and maintenance strategies.
• Work with school personnel and other professionals on plan development and implementation.
• Conduct behavior management counseling and skill training sessions for individuals and groups.
• Conduct regular sessions with the individual and family to improve functioning in education, work and daily activities.
• Advise school personnel on techniques to achieve plan goals.
• Participate in integration of services across settings as appropriate.
• Prepare and maintain case records and reports with confidentiality.
