This role sits within the Battery team of a pioneering electric aviation company developing certifying electric aircraft from the ground up. The organisation operates across the full development lifecycle, from early-stage design through to FAA certification and production, with a mission to fundamentally decarbonise commercial aviation.
The BMS Engineer will take end-to-end ownership of the Battery Management System and Charge Control functions and circuitry on the aircraft, covering everything from system definition and prototype board design through to firmware bring-up and field debugging. This is a broad, high-ownership position suited to engineers who are equally comfortable working at bare-metal embedded level as they are defining system requirements for a certification-intent programme.
Responsibilities:
- Design battery and charge management systems with world-class safety and fuel gauging capabilities
- Write system-level, software, and hardware requirements for certification-intent charge controller hardware
- Lead development of new and improved software and support its implementation and testing on hardware and in the aircraft
- Provide support and improvements for existing hardware and software across the aircraft platform
- Support debugging and testing of hardware and software within a certification environment
- Collaborate with the Ground Support Equipment team to deliver a seamless charging experience across platforms and with third-party EVSEs
Required Experience & Skills:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related field
- Strong understanding of electrical fundamentals, switching power supplies, and electrical isolation and insulation strategies
- Programming proficiency in C, C++, and Python
- Experience with software development and debugging for embedded systems
- Ability to operate lab equipment including low and high-voltage power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and soldering irons
- Experience with version control systems such as Git or SVN
Desirable / Additional Qualifications:
- Master's degree or equivalent experience
- Experience with EV charging standards
- Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout, with Altium preferred
- Understanding of electrical overcurrent protection coordination and high-voltage insulation techniques
- Experience with circuit simulation software, particularly for power electronics stability, line and load regulation, and control system responses
- In-depth knowledge of high-voltage designs above 800V including isolation boundaries and techniques for power and signal transmission
- Experience designing and testing for EMI mitigation and EMC compliance
- Background in the aerospace industry
- Pilot's licence or a genuine interest in flying
