Job summary

BETA Technologies in South Burlington, Vermont, is hiring a Battery Management System Engineer to own the BMS and charging control for the aircraft, from system definition to prototype bring-up and field debugging.

The ideal candidate will have broad embedded software and hardware experience, hands-on lab skills, C/C++, and Python, and a passion for safe, certifiable aerospace systems. This on-site role offers growth and impact in electric aviation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, computer science, embedded systems, or related fields.
  • Experience with electrical fundamentals, switching power supplies, electrical isolation/insulation strategies.
  • Ability to operate lab equipment including low and high-voltage power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes, multimeters, soldering irons, etc
  • Programming skills in C, C++, and Python
  • Experience with software development and debugging for embedded systems
  • Experience with version control systems (git, SVN, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Design battery and charge management systems with world class safety and fuel gauging capabilities
  • Provide support and improvements for existing hardware and software on aircraft
  • Write system level, software, and hardware requirements for certification-intent aircraft charge controller
  • Lead development of new and improved software and implementation/testing on the hardware and in the aircraft
  • Support debugging and testing of hardware and software in a certification environment
  • Work with the Ground Support Equipment (GSE) team to provide a seamless charging experience across BETA’s platforms and with 3rd party EVSEs

In this role as a Battery Management System Engineer, you’ll be a part of a small team responsible for the BMS and Charge Control functions and circuitry on the aircraft. You’ll own the system end to end, from defining how the system should work, to prototype board design, prototype firmware bring-up, and debugging issues in the field.

The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of embedded software and hardware development, from bare-metal board bring-up and understanding of microcontroller timing and execution characteristics to high-level software specification and design methods and techniques.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
  • Design battery and charge management systems with world class safety and fuel gauging capabilities
  • Provide support and improvements for existing hardware and software on aircraft

Minimum Qualifications We are seeking: (your Knowledge, Experience, and Abilities):
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in electrical engineering, computer science, embedded systems, or related fields.
  • Experience and understanding of electrical fundamentals, switching power supplies, electrical isolation/insulation strategies.
  • Ability to operate lab equipment including low and high-voltage power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes, multimeters, soldering irons, etc
  • Programming skills in C, C++, and Python
  • Experience with software development and debugging for embedded systems
  • Experience with version control systems (git, SVN, etc.)
Above and Beyond Qualifications that will distinguish you: (preferred qualifications):
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience with EV charging standards
  • Experience with schematic capture and printed circuit board layout. (Altium preferred)
  • Understanding of electrical overcurrent protection coordination and high-voltage insulation
  • Experience with circuit simulation software, especially related to power electronics stability, line/load regulation, control system responses, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of high-voltage (>800V) designs and isolation boundaries/techniques for power and signal transmission
  • Experience designing and testing for EMI mitigation and EMC
  • Experience in aerospace industry
  • Pilot’s license or an interest in flying
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • This position will be based on-site in South Burlington, Vermont.
  • Ability to transport yourself to various BETA locations around South Burlington, Vermont as needed
  • Able to work in a dog-friendly and open-office environment
  • Work will occasionally be outdoors when supporting tests

Compensation

$100,000—$135,000 USD
