Job summary

IAT Insurance Group in Illinois is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Inland Marine & Property Underwriter to lead a team and grow a Midwest book. The role blends strategic leadership with hands-on underwriting for inland marine and property lines in a hybrid setting (office Mon-Wed, remote Thu-Fri).

Naperville or Rolling Meadows location; you’ll drive broker relationships, set pricing, and guide risk selection while expanding our footprint across the Midwest.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Economics, or related field.
• 9+ years of inland marine and/or property underwriting experience.
• Experience leading, mentoring, and guiding underwriters.
• Strong understanding of the insurance marketplace, including inland marine and property products, pricing, and competitive dynamics.
• Proven ability to develop broker relationships that support both new and renewal business opportunities.
• Confidence in risk selection, pricing, and structuring deals, including the use of deductibles, coverage features, or reinsurance where appropriate.
• Authorized to work in the United States and must not require VISA sponsorship now or in the future.
• Industry designations CPCU, ARM, or AU (preferred).
• Master’s Degree (preferred).
• Exposure to loss control or risk engineering (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Own and grow a profitable inland marine and property book across the Midwest.
• Build and strengthen agency relationships to drive high-quality new business.
• Evaluate risks, pricing, and coverage structures with informed judgment.
• Analyze submissions, loss history, exposure changes for underwriting decisions.
• Set pricing reflecting risk and company strategy.
• Structure deals using coverage features, deductibles, or reinsurance as needed.
• Interpret policies and guide brokers and internal partners.
• Meet distribution partners at least 5 times per month to stay close to market activity.
• Perform other duties as needed.
