Job summary

Lawrence Unified School District is seeking an AVID Tutor for middle and high school to support students in AVID program. This non-contracted, part-time role pays $21.00 per hour and offers flexible scheduling as needed.

Candidates must be enrolled in a college/university with a strong academic background. Focus is to guide AVID students toward academic and personal excellence, through collaborative learning, writing support, and study-skills facilitation within a secondary school setting in

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a college or university.

• Academic background in liberal arts, science, or mathematics.

Responsibilities

• Conduct tutorial sessions that underscore collaborative learning and students teaching each other through discussion of notes.
• Determine concepts to focus on from worksheets, notes and discussions.
• Support students in all phases of writing: brainstorming, clustering, read arounds, revisions, editing.
• Help students take ownership of active learning while guiding them to use independent strategies.
• Reinforce that learning extends beyond studying to long-term achievement.
• Assist in familiar subjects with textbooks and AVID resources.
• Evaluate student binders: calendars, notes, learning logs.
• Assist in teaching study skills and college preparation.
• Set the tone and atmosphere of the AVID classroom.
• Acknowledge individuality of AVID students and foster pride.
• Assist AVID coordinator with course outlines, schedules, field trips, parent contacts, etc.
• Develop enrichment material resource file for tutorials.
• Communicate progress and concerns with AVID coordinator/teacher.
• Model personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students.

Qualifications:

Reports to: AVID Coordinator/Teacher

Job Goal: Be an active participant in the learning, growth, and personal development of students guiding them toward academic and personal excellence that will reach far beyond their high school years.

Performance and Responsibilities:

1. 1. Conduct tutorial sessions that underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes.
2. 2. Determine from student tutorial worksheets, notes, and discussions the concepts that need to be the focus of tutorial sessions.
3. 3. Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, read arounds, revisions, and editing.
4. 4. Allow students to shoulder the responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them with strategies that they will become accustomed to using independently.
5. 5. Reinforce the idea that learning extends far beyond mere studying to form the basis for long term accomplishments.
6. 6. Assist students in any subject area, by being familiar with students’ textbooks and materials and AVID classroom resources.
7. 7. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, and learning logs.
8. 8. Assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation.
9. 9. Take responsibility for the tone and atmosphere of the AVID classroom
10. 10. Acknowledge the individuality of all AVID students and work to develop their academic and personal pride.
11. 11. Assist the AVID coordinator as requested, such as contacting teachers regarding course outlines and assignment schedules, helping with field trips, contacting parents, etc.
12. 12. Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions.
13. 13. Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
14. 14. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.

Terms of Employment: Non-contracted position.

Salary: $21.00 per hour
