Job summary

Lawrence Unified School District is seeking an AVID Tutor for middle and high school to support students in AVID program. This non-contracted, part-time role pays $21.00 per hour and offers flexible scheduling as needed.

Candidates must be enrolled in a college/university with a strong academic background. Focus is to guide AVID students toward academic and personal excellence, through collaborative learning, writing support, and study-skills facilitation within a secondary school setting in

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a college or university.
• Be an excellent role model, motivated, organized.
• Able to work with secondary students in a supportive manner.
• Academic background in liberal arts, science, or mathematics.

Responsibilities

• Conduct tutorial sessions that underscore collaborative learning and students teaching each other through discussion of notes.
• Determine concepts to focus on from worksheets, notes and discussions.
• Support students in all phases of writing: brainstorming, clustering, read arounds, revisions, editing.
• Help students take ownership of active learning while guiding them to use independent strategies.
• Reinforce that learning extends beyond studying to long-term achievement.
• Assist in familiar subjects with textbooks and AVID resources.
• Evaluate student binders: calendars, notes, learning logs.
• Assist in teaching study skills and college preparation.
• Set the tone and atmosphere of the AVID classroom.
• Acknowledge individuality of AVID students and foster pride.
• Assist AVID coordinator with course outlines, schedules, field trips, parent contacts, etc.
• Develop enrichment material resource file for tutorials.
• Communicate progress and concerns with AVID coordinator/teacher.
• Model personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students.
