Job Overview

The City of Chicago is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Aviation Safety Director at O’Hare and Midway International Airports. The role involves supervising safety inspections, liaising with federal and local agencies, developing safety policies, and overseeing safety operations to ensure compliance with all regulations.

Key Details
  • Number of Positions: 2 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)
  • Starting Salary: $80,628.00 annually (BX-17)
  • Location: O’Hare and Midway International Airports, Chicago
  • Days: Monday to Friday
  • Hours: 9AM – 5PM, may be on call 24/7 depending on operational needs
Essential Duties
  1. Supervise Safety Specialists in airport construction project inspections to ensure safety standards are met.
  2. Coordinate with local and federal agencies (e.g., OSHA, FAA) and integrate safety practices into daily airport operations.
  3. Conduct site inspections and safety hazard assessments to mitigate risks.
  4. Develop and recommend safety policies and procedures.
  5. Lead investigations related to airport safety incidents and assist legal and insurance processes.
  6. Train staff on safety guidelines and communicate safety updates.
  7. Participate in safety committees and emergency preparedness exercises.
  8. Research and procure safety resources and equipment.
  9. Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local safety legislation.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Aviation Management, Public Administration, or related field, plus three years of safety program management experience, including one year in a supervisory role. Valid Illinois Driver’s License and ability to obtain airfield driving certification required.
