Aviation Public Information Officer (Administrative Officer)

Full-time position available with the Office of the City Manager, City Communications Division located at 601 Brasilia Ave.

Salary Range: $4,619-$6,928/month

Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Responsibilities
  • Manage daily and long-range communications activities for the Kansas City Aviation Department and its airports, Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Kansas City Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC).
  • Serve as the news media spokesperson for the Aviation Department, available 24/7 for daily and emergency situations.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national news media; proactively and reactively interface with them.
  • Pitch news stories and events to the media.
  • Perform and arrange interviews across television, radio, print, and internet media.
  • Collaborate with City Communications and Aviation staff on media inquiries and coverage.
  • Make responsible judgment calls independently or with leadership.
  • Monitor and report on media coverage.
  • Develop positive stories about the Kansas City Airports System and its tenants.
  • Plan and promote news conferences and aviation education workshops.
  • Coordinate information dissemination with law enforcement, federal agencies, airlines, cargo carriers, and concessionaires during routine and emergency situations.
  • Manage media aspects of special events and visits involving federal agencies, White House, and City officials.
  • Escort media inside airport terminals and on airfields.
  • Liaise with sports teams for media management during arrivals/departures.
  • Utilize Crisis Communications plans to respond to and manage crises, reviewing and updating as needed.
  • Respond to media inquiries and report to emergency operations during crises.
  • Manage and post content on social media platforms for both airports and the Aviation Department.
  • Assist in event planning, coordination, and promotion; provide media coverage through photographs and videos.
  • Support departmental leadership with administrative tasks, report preparation, and inter-agency liaison roles.
  • Handle service requests, inquiries, and complaints; improve procedures and participate in meetings.
  • Write scripts and manage recordings for public address announcements.
Qualifications

REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree and 3 years of professional experience in business or public sector administration, including at least 2 years managing complex projects or programs; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a valid driver's license, pass a drug screen, physical exam, FAA background check, and AOA driving test. Preference for experience in news/media and aviation/airport operations.
