Job summary

Qualifications

  • Must have valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare human remains for autopsy.
  • Weigh and measure remains.
  • Open remains and remove organs/tissues under direction.
  • Suture and clean remains after autopsy.
  • Assist with handling, transfers, labeling and storage of specimens.
  • Clean and maintain morgue and autopsy equipment.
  • Admission and release of bodies; evidence collection.
  • Inventory Morgue supplies and stocking.
  • Interact with law enforcement and funeral home personnel.
  • Other duties as directed by staff.

Job description

HHS Forensic Examiner's Office is seeking an Autopsy Assistant in Bismarck, ND.

Hiring Range: $20 per hour

This position is classified as temporary but is considered long-term temporary and is expected to be an ongoing position.

Duties

As an Autopsy Assistant, you will be assisting the Forensic Examiner with forensic autopsies approximately 12 to 20 hours per week. Hours will vary depending on the number of cases during the week. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing human remains for autopsy.
  • Weighing and measuring human remains.
  • Be able to open human remains, and under direction from the Forensic Examiner, remove organs and/or tissues.
  • Sutures and cleans remains upon completion of autopsy.
  • Assisting with proper handling, transfers, labeling and storing of specimens.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of morgue and autopsy equipment.
  • Admission and release of bodies.
  • Collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Inventory and stocking of morgue supplies.
  • Interaction with law enforcement and funeral home personnel.
  • Other duties as directed by Forensic Examiner's Office Staff

To be considered for this position, you are required to have a high school diploma or GED and (preferably) experience in a medical-related position such as, work in a morgue, mortuary or medical laboratory; work as an emergency medical technician; or work in a hospital or nursing home facility. Course work in biology, preferably including anatomy/physiology; or any combination of education or experience which would demonstrate the ability to perform the work may substitute for the experience requirement.

To be considered, an applicant must be available to work Mon through Friday 8-5 on call basis. Applicants should indicate their availability in their cover letter.

Successful applicants must be able to accurately follow procedures and are encouraged to suggest and implement systematic changes to those procedures when necessary. The applicant must be a willing team player and contribute to the attainment of office goals. Good interpersonal and communication skills needed for performing job duties. Applicant must demonstrate ability to self-start with the ability to work with minimal prompts. Preference may be given to those individuals with medical laboratory, emergency medical, nursing or mortuary science training. A valid driver's license is required.
