Job summary

ND Health and Human Services seeks an Autopsy Assistant in Bismarck, ND to support the Forensic Examiner with autopsies on a part-time, long-term temporary basis. The role involves preparing remains, handling tissues, and assisting with morgue operations, 12–20 hours per week.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and preferably experience in a medical-related setting. Candidates must be available Monday through Friday, 8–5, on-call, with a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; prior medical-related experience preferred (morgue, mortuary, medical lab, EMT, hospital, or nursing facility).
  • Biology coursework preferred, including anatomy/physiology; education/experience may substitute for experience.
  • Available Mon–Fri 8–5, on-call basis; indicate availability in cover letter.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare human remains for autopsy.
  • Weigh and measure remains.
  • Open remains and remove organs/tissues under direction.
  • Suture and clean remains after autopsy.
  • Assist with handling, transfers, labeling and storage of specimens.
  • Clean and maintain morgue and autopsy equipment.
  • Admission and release of bodies; evidence collection.
  • Inventory Morgue supplies and stocking.
  • Interact with law enforcement and funeral home personnel.
  • Other duties as directed by staff.
