Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, MD seeks PhD candidates for a multidisciplinary internship focusing on autonomous systems and navigation, guidance, and control algorithms. You will model, simulate, and prototype advanced systems across hypersonic missiles, submarines, and autonomous flight vehicles.

You will develop embedded software, perform design optimization, and collaborate with engineers and government sponsors.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
  • Proven internship experience or extensive classroom project work in guidance, inertial navigation, modern/adaptive control, classical control, optimization; RF/EO/IR, signal processing, robotics, programming.
  • Proficient in Matlab/Simulink, C++, Python or similar languages.
  • Eligible for Interim Secret clearance by start date; U.S. citizenship required.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Responsibilities

  • Pioneer design and research in guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for full lifecycle development of advanced systems.
  • Develop models for simulating and analyzing complex physics and sensors.
  • Test software and algorithms within an embedded systems environment.
  • Apply multi-disciplinary optimization for early phase vehicle designs.
  • Develop software to support simulation and algorithm development.
  • Collaborate with engineers and interact with government sponsors.
