The Company

Our client is a highly established North American energy and infrastructure development, investment and operating business with a track record spanning more than three decades.

The company develops, owns, operates and invests across major power generation and infrastructure platforms, with exposure spanning conventional and renewable generation, transmission, battery storage and emerging energy technologies. It has developed or acquired approximately 50,000 MW of generation assets and has raised more than $76 billion of debt and equity capital to support infrastructure investment across North America.

This is a sophisticated, well-capitalised organisation working on complex, long-term infrastructure projects. The business combines the pace and ownership of an investment/development environment with the stability and resources of an established market leader.

They are now investing further in how technology and automation can improve the way their internal teams operate.

The Opportunity

We are recruiting Automation Developers and Senior Automation Developers to join the company's New York office.

This is not an AI research, machine-learning or heavy software engineering position. The real requirement is much more practical: the business wants people who can get embedded within a function, understand how that team actually works, identify repetitive or inefficient processes and then build the automation themselves.

Successful hires will initially be embedded within either the Legal or Generation Development functions, working closely with the respective group leadership and their teams.

Rather than receiving a neatly defined technical specification, you'll sit directly with the people doing the work, understand their pain points and determine what can realistically be automated.

You will effectively operate as a combination of developer, product owner and internal business partner: identifying problems, deciding what should be prioritised, building the solution and making sure people can actually use it.

It's an unusually autonomous opportunity for someone who enjoys building things but also wants much greater exposure to the commercial side of a business.

What You'll Be Doing

Embedded Automation Development

• Work directly within either the Legal or Generation Development team as their dedicated automation specialist.
• Understand existing workflows, manual processes, bottlenecks and recurring administrative tasks.
• Identify where automation can materially reduce time, improve consistency or remove unnecessary manual work.
• Design, build, test and deploy practical automation solutions.
• Integrate solutions with existing enterprise systems, data sources and SaaS platforms.
• Take solutions from an initial business problem through to a usable production application.

Own the Problem, Not Just the Code

This is where the position differs from a conventional developer role.

You'll frequently be given a business problem rather than a technical brief.

You'll need to sit with lawyers, developers, project professionals and senior stakeholders, understand processes that may initially be messy or poorly defined, and translate them into something that can be automated. That ability to bridge technical development and non-technical users is central to the role.

You’ll also:

• Scope potential solutions independently.
• Determine which tools and technologies are appropriate.
• Balance requests coming from multiple stakeholders.
• Prioritise projects based on business impact.
• Explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues.
• Train users and document solutions so that what you build is genuinely adopted.

You won't have a separate product manager or business analyst sitting between you and the end user. The company specifically wants someone comfortable owning that entire relationship.

The Types of Problems You'll Solve

Within Legal, that could mean looking at document-heavy or repetitive workflows and finding ways to reduce the manual work involved in reviewing, processing or managing information.

Previous legal-sector experience would therefore be useful, but it isn't required. The business is more interested in whether you've successfully automated real business processes before.

Within Generation Development, you'll be working alongside teams responsible for complex infrastructure projects with development lifecycles that can run for 24-36 months. The opportunity is to identify manual tasks throughout those processes and find practical ways of automating them. Experience around energy, infrastructure, real estate, construction or another long-cycle development environment could therefore translate particularly well.
