Job summary

Blue Origin's Factory Automation team in Huntsville, AL, is seeking an Automation Controls Engineer to design, build, and deploy automated manufacturing systems across our facilities. You will apply first principles to develop scalable control architectures, work from concept through commissioning, and own aspects of the project lifecycle.

Ideal candidates have hands-on experience with PLC/HMI programming, safety systems, and industrial automation while collaborating with cross-functional teams

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Controls, or related engineering field.
• Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience developing or integrating industrial controls and automation systems, including PLC and HMI programming.
• Ability to interpret and review electrical and mechanical drawings.
• Experience with industrial safety system design including safety devices and safety-rated circuits.
• U.S. citizen/national or lawful resident status required.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with applications engineers on conceptual automated manufacturing equipment, inputting controls architecture from concept to detailed design.
• Design and support control system architectures including network topology, I/O distribution, safety systems, and communication protocols.
• Participate in the industrial controls and electrical design of bespoke automation systems.
• Analyze system behavior from first principles to identify root causes and develop sound solutions.
• Develop offline simulations to validate control logic, robot paths, cycle times, and behavior before hardware availability.
• Support online debugging and commissioning of PLC, HMI, robot, and related controls programs.
• Integrate auxiliary equipment, machines, and tools into unified control systems.
• Work with panel fabricators and field teams; provide technical support during integration and commissioning.
• Lead factory/site acceptance testing and contribute to build, install, and start-up of automated systems.
• Create controls documentation including sequences of operations, I/O lists, diagrams, and programming documentation.
