Job summary

Blue Origin's Factory Automation team is seeking an Automation Controls Engineer to design, build, and deploy automated manufacturing systems that scale across Blue Origin's facilities.

The role spans R&D, design, build, installation, and commissioning, offering growth across the full project lifecycle. You will apply first-principles thinking to diagnose issues and craft robust automation solutions, collaborating with applications engineers and fabrication teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Controls, or related engineering field.
  • 2+ years hands-on experience developing or integrating industrial controls and automation systems, including PLC and HMI programming.
  • Experience with industrial automation platforms (robots, material handling, CNC integration, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience with safety system design including functional safety devices and safety PLCs.
  • U.S. citizenship or eligible to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with applications engineers on conceptual automated manufacturing equipment and provide controls input from concept to detailed design.
  • Design and support control system architectures including network topology, I/O distribution, safety systems, and communication protocols.
  • Participate in industrial controls and electrical design of bespoke automation systems.
  • Analyze system behavior using first principles to identify root causes and develop solutions for challenging automation issues.
  • Develop offline simulations to validate control logic, robot paths, cycle times, and system behavior before hardware is available.
  • Support and execute online debugging and commissioning of PLC, HMI, robot, and related controls programs.
  • Integrate auxiliary equipment and tools into unified control systems.
  • Work with panel fabricators and field teams; provide technical support during integration and commissioning.
  • Lead factory/site acceptance testing and contribute to build, install, and startup of automated systems.
  • Create controls documentation including sequences of operations, I/O lists, and network diagrams.
