Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking an Automation Controls Engineer to design, build, and deploy automated manufacturing controls across manufacturing units. You will work on control system architectures, safety, and communication protocols, spanning from concept to commissioning.

The role emphasizes applying first principles to diagnose issues, with hands-on PLC/HMI programming, offline simulations, and collaboration with applications engineers to deliver scalable manufacturing solutions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience developing or integrating industrial controls and automation systems, including PLC and HMI programming.
  • Broad exposure to robots, material handling systems (gantries, conveyors), CNC integration, or Process tools.
  • Interest in applying engineering fundamentals to diagnose complex system failures and develop first-principles solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with applications engineers on conceptual automated manufacturing equipment, contributing controls architecture input from concept through detailed design.
  • Design and support control system architectures including network topology, I/O distribution, safety systems, and communication protocols.
  • Develop offline simulations of automated systems to validate control logic, robot paths, cycle times, and system behavior before hardware availability.
  • Support online debugging and commissioning of PLC, HMI, robot, and similar industrial controls programs.
  • Create controls documentation packages including S.O.O, I/O lists, network diagrams, and program documentation.
