Job summary

The Hawaii State Department of Education is seeking an Automotive Mechanic I to service a range of motorized equipment, from trucks to graders. This full-time position requires strong mechanical and electrical repair skills and the ability to manage apprentices and helpers on large projects.

Applicants must have four years of full-time experience or completion of a four-year apprenticeship, with knowledge of automotive systems and safety practices.

Qualifications

• Four (4) years of full-time work experience in or successful completion of a four (4)-year apprenticeship program for auto mechanic in motor equipment repair work under a journeyman mechanic or equivalent.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Knowledge of practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade.
• Ability to operate and adjust motorized equipment and perform overhauls.

Responsibilities

• Repairs mechanical and electrical parts of motorized equipment and makes necessary adjustments.
• Replaces worn or defective parts and reassembles components.
• Sets timing mechanisms and adjusts brakes, ignition systems, wheel alignments and running gear.
• Instructs automotive helpers or apprentices as part of an organized program.
• Leads a group of automotive mechanics on large repair jobs and reports progress to supervision.
