Job description

Purpose Statement

Performs as a skilled automotive mechanic responsible for completing all tasks required to diagnose, properly repair, and maintain vehicles and designated equipment and ensure their safe and proper operation by following specific policies, procedures, methods, codes and manufacturer specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Lays-out and performs all job duties relating to the proper diagnoses, repair and maintenance of engines and associated components of vehicles, machines and equipment in accordance with manufacturers' standards of quality:
    • Operates electronic, mechanical or computerized diagnostic equipment and tools to determine the required repair, component replacement and/or maintenance required to remedy the identified or reported failure.
    • Repairs or replaces broken, damaged, faulty, defective vehicle/equipment components for electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and other associated systems.
    • Disassembles, repairs and rebuilds all sizes of internal combustion engines.
    • Disassembles, repairs and rebuilds all varieties of transmission/drive trains and/or assemblies.
    • Repairs automobile body by replacing damaged parts or repairing damaged area by welding/brazing/using mechanical fittings and/or fiberglass materials, including sanding and painting.
    • Ensures compliant, safe, and reliable operation of all fleet vehicle, equipment types/models as well as associated equipment within this activity.
  • Researches, interprets and follows manufacturer's diagnostic techniques, repair/maintenance/adjustment procedures, specifications and standards on assigned tasks. Consults with supervisor and/or foreman for advice and/or instructions in solving difficult diagnostic/repair problems.
  • Determines nature/extent of the job, identifies the required repair/maintenance procedures, proper service tools to be utilized and identifies required materials or components; prepares cost estimates; requisitions or orders parts from vendors and identifies/locates equipment/tools required for the job. Responsible for timely replacement and maintenance of all assigned tools and equipment, replenishment of parts/materials used from garage parts inventory. Uses company procurement card to make parts or material purchases from designated vendors.
  • Provides technical/mechanical assistance (troubleshoots) for difficult diagnostic/maintenance/repair situations to lesser grade mechanics. Provides guidance to procure parts, components or materials needed for repairs.
  • Maintains assigned work areas/garage and their equipment, machines, tools, and other devices in a clean, orderly, accessible and safe operating condition; performs housekeeping chores as required and/or directed.
  • Performs trouble/road calls as dispatched.
  • Complies with and enforces all safety rules, regulations and practices in effect and established/adopted by the Company. Promotes safety, safe work habits, and good housekeeping to include the reporting and rectifying, as qualified, any unsafe conditions or act. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Prepares and maintains manually or by computer application complete testing, repair and maintenance, cost allocation documentation. Performs other clerical/administrative duties intrinsic to this activity including reconciling monthly procurement card statements, maintaining logs and/or schedules, compiling vehicle/equipment historical data and necessary documentation for reports; inputting required data into a computer program and extracting required historical or technical data from computer program or internet web sites.
  • Ability to report to and work at various garage locations as required.
Other Functions / Responsibilities
  • Performs all other related work as directed/required.
Qualifications
  • Completed all required Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal/State, OSHA Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs. Must maintain at least minimum passing scores per regulations, for all recurring Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • At least six years successful and progressive experience in all phases of gas/diesel/internal combustion engine-driven equipment.
  • Possesses a very good working knowledge of all codes, regulations (applicable FMCSA, DOT, HI state statutes), standards, and safety rules/regulation/practices of the regulatory agencies/trade/Company in addition to specialized knowledge of the design, construction, assembly, adjustment, maintenance and repair of gas/diesel/internal combustion engine driven equipment.
  • Ability to attain additional ASE certifications.
  • Must be a safe and competent driver, cognizant of all traffic laws and have a clean traffic abstract.
  • Qualified in all phases of the work described.
  • Very proficient in the proper use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the trade and have a good safety record.
Preferred Education And/or Work Experience
  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling in automotive repair.
Required Licensure, Certification, Registration Or Designation
  • Possesses a Hawaii mechanic license or ASE certifications for the following: brakes (Med.-HD truck preferred), engine repair (diesel preferred) and electrical-electronic systems.
  • Must possess a valid Class A, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement with no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49.
