Job summary

Gersh Autism in West Hempstead, NY seeks a Teaching Assistant to support the teacher across academic and life-skills instruction for students aged 5-21.

You will help implement ABA-based approaches, track progress, assist with IEPs/BIPs, collaborate with specialists, and maintain a safe, engaging classroom during standard hours (Mon-Fri 8:00 AM–3:30 PM) with occasional meetings. The role pays $23 per hour.

Qualifications

• Prior experience as a Teaching Assistant is required.
• Teaching Assistant Skills Test (ATAS) or ability to take the TA exam.
• Experience working with children on the Autism Spectrum preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support the teacher in utilizing methodologies such as ABA or Collaborative Problem Solving to prioritize student needs.
• Create a positive, authentic learning environment by displaying student work and projects.
• Maintain a consistent and safe classroom environment for students.
• Assist in planning and executing lessons tailored to individual student needs and group lessons.
• Modify materials to ensure effective student learning.
• Keep accurate student records and write annual reports as per guidelines.
• Implement and support IEPs and BIPs for each student.
• Administer assessments to track student progress and identify areas of concern.
• Collaborate with professionals to support a team-based approach.
• Promote student health, safety, and social interaction with peers.
• Attend required training, team meetings, and school events.
• Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding classroom dynamics and student development.
• Complete daily attendance and supervise students during bathroom and mealtime activities.
