Job description

Leave Corporate Accounting Behind. Come Make an Impact.

Have recent mergers, acquisitions, or private equity ownership changed what you love about public accounting? Are you looking for a place where your work matters, your clients know your name, and your contributions are genuinely valued?

Smith, Sullivan & Brown is a locally owned CPA firm dedicated to serving nonprofit organizations that strengthen our communities. We're growing and looking for an experienced Audit Manager who wants meaningful work, strong client relationships, and a supportive team culture.

Here, you'll do more than complete audits. You'll help organizations tell their stories, strengthen their operations, and fulfill their missions. You'll work alongside professionals who care about each other, enjoy what they do, and believe that a successful career should leave room for family, friends, hobbies, and life outside the office.

We prefer a hybrid work arrangement, but we're open to fully remote candidates who are the right fit for our team.

If you're ready to be part of a firm where both your colleagues and clients truly appreciate your expertise, we'd love to talk with you.

What You'll Do

As an Audit Manager, you'll work closely with nonprofit organizations and lead audit engagements from planning through final presentation. Our clients view us as trusted advisors, not just compliance providers, and they rely on us for guidance throughout the year.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage multiple audit and review engagements for nonprofit organizations
  • Lead engagement planning, risk assessment, and execution
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop audit staff
  • Prepare and review financial statements
  • Evaluate internal controls and identify process improvements
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to management and Boards of Directors
  • Build strong, long-term client relationships
  • Present audit results to client leadership and governing boards
  • Assist with scheduling, budgeting, and billing responsibilities
  • Work with CaseWare, Thomson Reuters Engagement software, Excel, Word, and QuickBooks
  • Review and maintain familiarity with Form 990 filings
  • Participate in prospective client meetings and business development opportunities
  • Serve as a proactive problem solver and trusted advisor
  • Take ownership of engagements while collaborating closely with firm leadership
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of public accounting experience
  • Strong audit and financial reporting experience
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Commitment to exceptional client service
  • Ability to explain complex issues clearly and confidently
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • CPA license preferred but not required

*Candidates pursuing CPA certification may be eligible for reimbursement of exam fees and study materials.

Compensation

Salary Range: $100,000- $150,000 annually, depending on experience, credentials, nonprofit audit expertise, and leadership responsibilities.
