Job description

The Blackwood Department of Real Estate within the R. B. Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor of Real Estate who will hold the Blackwood Endowed Chair. This is an exciting opportunity for an established scholar to join a growing department interested in expanding its research, teaching, and service capacity while continuing to build its international reputation. The position is a tenured, academic-year appointment beginning August 10, 2027. The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research regularly leading to publications in top-tier academic journals such as Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Real Estate Research, and Real Estate Economics. Additionally, the candidate will carry an annual teaching load of three courses (9 credits) in the undergraduate real estate program and engage in service activities that increase awareness of the department in both the academic and professional communities. Instructional effectiveness and flexibility are essential, as is a willingness to engage in experiential learning activities that prepare undergraduate students for their eventual entry into the workforce.

Responsibilities include:
  • Conduct high-quality research leading to publication in top-tier academic journals.
  • Teach three courses (9 credits) annually in the undergraduate real estate program.
  • Engage in experiential learning activities that prepare undergraduate students for entry into the workforce.
  • Participate in service activities that increase awareness of the department within academic and professional communities.
  • Explore emerging real estate trends, present at national and international conferences, engage in timely policy debate, and contribute to the professionalization of the real estate industry.
  • Contribute to the Pamplin+ initiative, with its focus on technology readiness and workforce preparation.
  • Work collegially and collaboratively with faculty and staff.
About the Department:

Thanks to a generous $10 million gift from the Blackwood family in 2021, the department’s endowment is well positioned to support the scholarly endeavors of its faculty. Faculty are encouraged to explore emerging real estate trends, present at national and international conferences, engage in timely policy debate, and contribute to the professionalization of the real estate industry at large.

At present, the department serves approximately 400 undergraduate students pursuing B.S. Real Estate degrees who complete a core business curriculum coupled with a series of courses introducing them to the fundamentals of real estate development, finance, law, market analysis, operations, and planning. The curriculum also provides students with opportunities to pursue double majors or minors in real estate-adjacent fields while still graduating within four years.

As one of seven departments in the Pamplin College of Business, the Blackwood Department of Real Estate and its faculty contribute to the Pamplin+ initiative, which focuses on technology readiness and workforce preparation from the time students enroll in the college until the time they graduate. Faculty are also expected to demonstrate a willingness to work collegially and collaboratively with faculty and staff.
