Job summary

IMRF in Oak Brook, IL seeks an experienced in-house counsel to provide legal guidance to staff and the Board of Trustees. You will advise employers and members on Illinois Pension Code matters and manage non-disability administrative hearings.

You will defend or manage non-investment-related litigation involving IMRF and its Board, review contracts, RFPs, and procurement rules, and supervise the legal department and procurement staff.

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice law in Illinois with prior experience in Administrative Review Law matters.
• Strong legal writing skills and general knowledge of Supreme Court Rules.
• Prior appellate experience is preferred.
• Experience as counsel to municipal or local governments or governmental pensions is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Defend administrative decisions of IMRF Board in state court.
• Serve as counsel to the Board of Trustees Benefit Review Committee and staff counsel in administrative hearings.
• Respond to inquiries regarding the Illinois Pension Code from employers, members and others.
• Review and advise staff on service, death, disability, retirement claims and other matters as needed.
• Provide counsel to Human Resources on employment law matters.
• Review and interpret state and federal statutes.
• Review and approve contracts and procurement; advise on procurement rules.
• Manage the procurement function for IMRF in compliance with policies.
• Oversee and administer the Trustee election process.
