Job summary

Teachers’ Retirement System of Illinois seeks an in‑house Legal Counsel to provide expert legal advice, research, and written work product supporting TRS operations. Under the General Counsel, you will interpret Illinois law, draft memos, and counsel on contracts and procurement matters.

The role requires strong research and writing, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple assignments with stakeholders. Travel may be involved; Illinois license is essential.

Qualifications

• Requires a JD from an accredited law school.
• Licensed attorney in good standing in Illinois or ability to obtain licensure in IL.
• 5–7 years of post‑bar experience in a law firm, corporate legal dept, or government agency.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal review, analysis and advice regarding System administration, including member benefits and contracts.
• Advise on FOIA, Open Meetings Act, Pension Code, and related regulations; draft memoranda and policies.
• Maintain familiarity with applicable law and TRS policies, and recommend revisions to protect System interests.
• Interact with business stakeholders and external parties to complete duties; travel occasionally for collaboration and training.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel.
