  • Knowledge of best practices in IT management; strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.

About the Department: The purpose of Auxiliary and Business Services (ABS) is to supportthe overall mission of the University and to improve quality oflife on campus for all students and staff. ABS provides innovativeservices and strategic business partnerships that improve value,increase student success, and enhance financial conditions.

About the Position: The Associate Director, Technology Services serves as the seniorperson responsible for providing operational oversight of CASO andIT services for the University electronic security systems and forassisting in providing technical oversight for ABS. The AssociateDirector collaborates with all departments within the universityincluding, members and guests of George Mason to ensure thesecurity and safety of the Mason community. This position willdevelop, implement, and manage the institution’s physical securitysystems. This position is responsible for supervision of the Card AccessSecurity Office (CASO) team and assist the Director with leadingthe Technology Services team in ABS. This position is responsiblefor the total operation and security of the electronic card accesssystem, the University’s camera systems, as well as any otherconnected systems. The Associated Director ensures that projects meet the departmentand divisional business needs, and current and future technologiesare leveraged to its fullest. This position oversees all operationsfor systems and interfaces with central IT for approvals. Thisposition ensures support is provided for systems, desktops,peripherals, and other needed equipment. Further, this positionwill ensure the confidentiality and security of all Universityinformation in compliance with George Mason University’s computingpolicies. The Associate Director, Technology Services supervises ateam of technology specialists and CASO operations.

Responsibilities
Project/Process Management
  • Plan and manage projects; documentation, project plans,schedules, resource requirements, costs and budgets, standards andprocedures, quality and assurance;
  • Delegate project leads, manage and lead work teams asrequired;
  • Develop and manage operations, processes, and staffing for theassigned systems;
  • Provide oversight and management of systems within Mason Cardand Card Access Security Office (CASO) to ensure systems arecompliant with University and industry standards;
  • Monitor and manage budgets for; CASO operations andtechnicians, and Technology Services. Manage and coordinate withthe Universities security program to avoid and/or control lossesand apply the processes necessary to provide a secureenvironment;
  • Develop strategies for threat/vulnerability analyses todetermine the probable frequency and severity of natural andman-made disasters and criminal activity on the organization’sability to deliver services;
  • Develop standard operating procedures for IT operations for thedivision;
  • Develop ways to enhance integrations with other Universitysystems and streamline processes; and
  • Develop, manage or conduct surveys and analyses of, processes,and systems to evaluate current divisional systems, proceduralsecurity, information systems security, employee awareness, andrecovery capabilities.
Application/System Administration
  • Oversee and manage the design, development, and maintenance onall components of assigned systems in ABS departmental enterprisesystems, including overall system functionality, forms, reporting,interfaces/integrations, and other modules;
  • Responsible for operations and performance of assignedapplications and systems;
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards of assignedapplications and systems;
  • Ensure development of technical design and documentation ofapplication dependent data conversions, interfaces, customreporting, and custom applications in adherence to SDLC bestpractices;
  • Provide support and guidance to internal customers duringapplication development and post deployment;
  • Manage and mentor full-time employees and student staff indeveloping skills necessary to develop and maintain applicationsand systems;
  • Participate and help manage an on-call rotation for after hour,critical, system-wide outages and emergencies and work withappropriate staff to resolve issues; and
  • Provide support for departmental events, both on site and atremote locations.
Documentation and Policy
  • Lead IT team in development and practice of documentationstandards for documenting applications, systems, andprocedures;
  • Ensure documentation compliance for all processes andprocedures for operational processes as well as technicalones;
  • Ensure access and permissions are correct for systems and thatall systems are within compliance of local, state, industry, andUniversity guidelines;
  • Develop standard operating procedures around the security andmanagement of systems, including a robust policy for patchingsystems;
  • Ensure that risk analysis, business impact, and continuitydocumentation is created and maintained for all ABS applicationsand systems; and
  • Ensure timely and accurate response to auditing requests.Ensure that all staff is trained on GMU computing policies.
Infrastructure/Systems Oversight
  • Continual monitoring of critical infrastructure systems toensure proper operation of supported systems;
  • Manage, patch, and optimize underlying server infrastructureand oversee complex system integrations between departmentalapplications and university-wide databases;
  • Monitoring of all systems to ensure proper operation;
  • Collect daily information on any system issues or anomalies andproperly respond to them and notify where appropriate;
  • Continuous optimization of systems to ensure peakperformance;
  • Ensure all underlying platforms and methods can meet the dailyneeds of our applications and mission; and
  • Maintain records on all systems and generate reports as needed.Ensure compliance of all systems for any audits.
Risk Assessment
  • Select, design, implement, and manage card access securitymeasures to reduce risk;
  • Oversee, configure, and maintain enterprise access control andIP-based security camera systems (CCTV) to ensure continuousphysical security coverage;
  • Conduct physical security walk throughs to ensure propersecurity and integrity of space;
  • Assess the effectiveness of the security measures by testingand monitoring;
  • Provide supervision and guidance to regarding new technologiesand ensure proper deployment;
  • Conduct system reviews to ensure security and stability.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or the equivalentcombination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience managing IT projects. This includesproject planning, resource leveling, cost/budget planning, andscope management;
  • Experience with access control and security camerasystems;
  • Experience with managing servers and system integrations;
  • Demonstrated experience in SQL Server database, includingapplication development;
  • Demonstrated experience in Windows desktop and serverenvironments;
  • Demonstrated experience as an IT manager with a focus oncustomer service experience;
  • Knowledge of best practices in IT management;
  • Knowledge of electronic and mechanical access controlsystems;
  • Knowledge of best practices for physical security;
  • Knowledge of integration techniques and processes;
  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  • Skill and proficiency in performing duties of applicationadministration. This includes, but is not limited to, user controland auditing, application integration, and performing applicationupgrades;
  • Skill and proficiency with managing IT issues, (i.e. using anIT ticketing system) and resolving incidents;
  • Skill and proficiency in performing duties of applicationadministration. This includes, but is not limited to, user controland auditing, application integration, and performing applicationupgrades;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and to adapt in aconstantly changing environment; and
  • Ability to effectively supervise and manage staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in related field; and
  • Experience supervising staff.
