Miami University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Medical Ethics within the Philosophy Department. The ideal candidate will have competence in other applied ethics and/or environmental philosophy and will contribute to the growing emphasis on healthcare education for students pursuing nursing, pre‑med, and related programs.

The position is non‑tenure track but renewable with opportunities for promotion (Associate and Full ranks) and long‑term contracts.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy by time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness and experience.
  • Ability to teach Medical Ethics and related ethics courses.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Medical Ethics at least once per year, possibly each semester.
  • Teach introductory ethics courses and other Applied Ethics courses.
  • Collaborate with the Mallory‑Wilson Center for Healthcare Education and department colleagues.

Job Description

The Department of Philosophy at Miami University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in Medical Ethics with competence in other areas of applied ethics and/or environmental philosophy, starting Fall 2027. We have teaching needs in applied ethics, environmental philosophy, and writing philosophy. The College of Arts and Science at Miami University has a growing emphasis on preparing students for careers in healthcare, including nursing, physician assistant, and pre‑med programs.

The successful candidate will teach Medical Ethics at least once a year, and possibly every semester. The remaining teaching load would include introductory courses and other Applied Ethics courses. Prior coursework in biology and/or the health sciences is desirable but not required. Service to the department and university is expected. The successful candidate will also work closely with the Mallory‑Wilson Center for Healthcare Education.

Assistant Teaching Professor positions at Miami University are non‑tenure track positions, but are renewable and have opportunities for promotion (Associate and Full ranks) that include long‑term contracts. We seek a candidate who will flourish in a pluralist department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: Ph.D. in Philosophy by time of appointment; teaching experience and demonstration of teaching effectiveness.
