Scope: Assists the Lead Teacher in developing and implementing daily classroom programs for preschool children, collaborating to enhance parents' roles in their child's education and development.
Planning/Preparation
- Participates in planning with the teacher; assists with implementing daily classroom activities.
- Prepares and organizes classroom materials according to the planned program.
- Prepares and organizes food for meals and snacks as backup to the Food Service Specialist.
- Works with the team to plan and conduct family events; encourages family involvement.
- Participates in interdisciplinary planning for children and families.
- Gains knowledge through in-service trainings, staff meetings, including 15 hours of MERIT-approved training annually.
In Class
- Supports children's emotional and individual learning needs through positive interactions.
- Participates in family-style meal service and facilitates mealtime conversations.
- Oversees health habits; administers first aid; ensures safety; collaborates with Mental Health Professional as needed.
- Completes attendance, meal, and snack records; observes and documents child development; develops learning plans within 90 days of enrollment.
- Administers standardized screenings.
- May assume teacher responsibilities in their absence; assists with volunteer recruitment and training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- CDA certificate in early childhood education or child development.
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices.
- Effective communication skills; ability to relate positively in a diverse environment.
- Adaptability to varied situations and instructional concepts.
- Basic clerical skills.
- Availability for occasional evening meetings and home visits.
- Supervision of students during field trips.
Provisional Qualifications
- One year of relevant experience in preschool or childcare.
Certification and Licenses
Required before employment:
- TB screening, MMR, COVID vaccination documentation.
- DCYF background check clearance.
- MERIT registration and STARTS ID.
- Food Handler's Permit.
Within 45 days of hire:
- First aid and CPR certification.
- Other role-specific trainings.
Physical Demands
- Must exert 10-20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, or pull objects.
- Involves sitting, walking, standing, and some running.
- Requires good perception of sound, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and handling materials.
