Job summary

Burns & McDonnell seeks an Assistant Substation Engineer to assist senior staff in designing high-voltage substations from concept through construction. You will help prepare design packages, perform electrical studies, and support field inspections under a licensed engineer’s supervision.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
• ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
• Prior internship or related consulting experience is preferred.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Campus or community involvement is preferred.
• Basic knowledge of standard engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and collaboration skills.
• EI/T certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the design of substation projects from concept to completion.
• Assist in preparing substation design packages (layout, protection, relaying, electrical studies).
• Assist in developing substation calculations (insulation, grounding, voltage drop, cable sizing).
• Assist in preparing design sketches, cost estimates, specs, BOMs, and other deliverables.
• Apply IEEE, NESC, and other standards in work.
• Assist with field inspections of substation facilities.
• Research and compile project data for managers.
• Assist client presentations, reports, and visuals to show results and status.
• Identify and help resolve project issues; adhere to schedule and QA/QC guidelines.
