Kleinfelder is expanding its Northern California team and is actively seeking the right candidate. This position involves leading a team of inspection/testing and project management professionals, managing projects, collaborating with CM/RE teams, and working with clients to deliver complex programs/projects in the Bay Area. Responsibilities include business development, working with other project managers, and ensuring our team has the tools, skills, and mentorship to grow.

The Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) will support field engineering and construction management for infrastructure projects focusing on the installation and rehabilitation of ductile iron pipe (DIP) and other underground utilities (water, sewer, storm drain, gas) for public and private clients in the San Francisco Bay Area. The ARE ensures construction compliance with contract documents, specifications, and regulatory requirements while coordinating with clients, contractors, and stakeholders.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Resident Engineer in overseeing daily construction activities of underground utility projects involving ductile iron pipe (4” to 60”+).
  • Monitor contractor work for compliance with plans, specifications, and safety standards.
  • Observe trenching, shoring, pipe laying, backfilling, testing, and surface restoration.
  • Maintain detailed inspection reports, photographs, and logs.
  • Assist with submittal reviews, RFI responses, change orders, and as-built drawings.
  • Coordinate with public agencies, utility companies, property owners, and stakeholders.
  • Participate in progress meetings and assist with schedule tracking and pay estimates.

  • Conduct or assist with pressure tests, disinfection, flushing, CCTV inspections, and utility cutovers.
  • Assist in resolving field conflicts or unforeseen conditions with engineering staff.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of ductile iron pipe installation standards (AWWA, ASTM, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Bay Area utility agency requirements (SFPUC, EBMUD, Caltrans, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with construction management software (e.g., Procore, e-Builder, Bluebeam) is a plus.
  • Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • EIT or NICET certification preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather and active construction sites.
  • Capable of walking long distances, climbing trenches, and lifting 25+ lbs.
