Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an Assistant District Construction Engineer to oversee highway construction contracts, including layout, sampling, testing, and documentation. The role interfaces with district and HQ teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure compliance with plans and procedures.

The position involves supervising staff, developing scopes of work for CE&I contracts, and participating in selection committees. Travel and extended hours may be required.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and six (6) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Physical demands include sitting or standing for extended periods; may require travel and extended hours.

Responsibilities

• Oversees administration and oversight of highway construction contracts, including layout, sampling/testing, record maintenance, and final construction documentation.
• Coordinates construction activities with Resident Construction Engineers, SCOOT Pre-construction, consultants, contractors, Headquarters, and District personnel.
• Supervises staff by preparing performance plans and evaluations; coaches, counsels, and trains employees; and implements management initiatives.
