Job Purpose

A successful alumni relations program depends on a robust strategy to build lasting relationships with alumni and ensure their continued engagement and support. The Assistant Director, Alumni Programs, focuses on developing and implementing centralized engagement initiatives and programs to support the alumni community at Howard University. This role is a key driver in fostering a lifelong connection between the University and its alumni population through educational, professional development, and networking opportunities.

Supervisory Authority

This position will have supervisory authority over the Manager for Career and Professional Development Manager and the Manager for Reunion Programs. The Assistant Director provides leadership, direction, coaching, performance management, and professional development for these positions; establishes annual goals and priorities; and ensures alignment across program portfolios.

Nature and Scope

Reporting to the Director of Alumni Relations, this position oversees strategies and long‑term projects that aim to cultivate a strong, supportive, and engaged alumni network. The Assistant Director will be a key driver in the growth of centralized alumni engagement through programs, outreach, and volunteer development. This role works closely with the Director of Alumni Relations to develop sustainable alumni programs and execute priorities and will serve as a liaison for internal and external stakeholders, representing the Alumni Relations team through various forms of communication. The position requires collaboration with various campus partners, including the career services and development teams, to ensure alignment of efforts and to promote philanthropic support from alumni. This role is also responsible for overseeing career development opportunities and reunions.

Principal Accountabilities
  • The Assistant Director, Alumni Programs, is responsible for the day‑to‑day operation of long‑term alumni programs, focusing on centralized, non‑geographical initiatives.
  • This includes planning, developing, and executing programs that provide career readiness and professional development for alumni.
  • The role will manage platforms and projects that facilitate alumni mentorship and networking.
  • The position is accountable for overseeing the planning and execution of all alumni reunions and reunion staff roles.
  • Additionally, the position works alongside the campus partners like the Office of the Secretary, Center for Career and Professional Success, and the Ralphe Bunche Center.
  • A key responsibility includes developing and disseminating engaging content through various channels, including newsletters, social media, and online communities, to keep alumni informed and connected.
  • The Assistant Director will also track and analyze alumni engagement metrics and use this data to inform future strategies and improve programs.
  • The role also involves collaborating with leadership to identify and recognize alumni contributions through programs and events.
  • This position will support efforts to maintain an up‑to‑date alumni database and provide reports to university stakeholders as requested.

  • Proven experience in planning and executing large‑scale events and multi‑channel engagement strategies.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse constituencies.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in relevant technologies, including alumni databases (e.g., Raiser's Edge), event management tools, PeopleGrove, and social media.
  • Ability to work comfortably and effectively both independently and in group scenarios.
  • A belief in and ability to articulate the university's mission and the importance of alumni engagement.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as business, marketing, or communications. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in alumni relations, event management, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience working with various software programs for engagement, including marketing platforms, event platforms, or CRM systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed for events or meetings.
