Job summary

Vincennes University seeks an Assistant Director to help manage the Blazers Achieve Student Success Services program, focusing on outcome-driven operations and supervision of peer mentors. Responsibilities

  • Assist participants in completing postsecondary forms (transcripts, FAFSA, scholarships).
  • Collaborate on grant services/activities, some evenings, to meet objectives.
  • Develop and evaluate plans to assess grant activities and data for APR.
  • Assist with student intake during START VUs, including some Saturdays.
  • Develop/instruct SSS University Experience class (SSKL 006).
  • Coordinate team professional development to stay current in the field.
  • Provide support and guidance for direct reports; assist with onboarding/trainings.
  • Ensure alignment with grant and college goals; report alterations to Director.
  • Monitor student progress and coach life skills; connect to campus resources.
  • Analyze early warning alerts and contact students.
  • Supervise/evaluate Peer Mentors/Tutors.

Description

Primary Function:

To assist the Director in successfully managing the operations of the Blazers Achieve SSS program that are outcome driven. The Assistant Director manages academic support to program participants through coaching and supervision, especially to the Peer Mentors/Tutors. Effective supervisory skills include coaching, mentoring, executive functioning to support employees and students in achieving the college and program’s mission and goals.

The Assistant Director will perform duties related to the operations of Blazers Achieve Student Support Services.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Front line communication: Answer and assist; and direct other departmental calls and questions.
  • Provides educational services, mentors, and coaches to underrepresented populations (i.e., diverse cultural, ethnic, low-income, first generation, students with disabilities).
  • Assists Director with recruitment and follow-up with participants.
  • Assists participants in completion of postsecondary forms (e.g., transcript, FAFSA, scholarships).
  • Collaborates, plans, and organizes grant services/activities, which may include some evenings, to ensure grant objectives (i.e, persistence, good academic standing graduation and/or transfer) are met.
  • Collaborates in the development and implementation of evaluation plans to assess the effectiveness of grant activities/objectives and ensures accuracy in data collection for the annual performance report (APR).
  • Assists with student intake process during START VUs including some Saturdays.
  • Collaborates, develops, and instructs SSKL 006 (SSS University Experience) class.
  • Coordinates Team professional development in order to maintain currency in the field.
  • Provides support and guidance for all direct reports and exercises sound management decisions.
  • Coaches, and assists with onboarding and ongoing training to ensure best possible delivery of services to students.
  • Ensures alignment with grant goals and college goals and reports any needed alterations to the Director.
  • Monitors and assesses the students’ progress in classes, as well as coaches life skills by helping the students develop a goals setting mindset, self-regulation, increased communication skills, and finds appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Analyzes early warning alerts and contacts students.
  • Supervises and evaluates Peer Mentors/Tutors.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills, as well as being an active listener to students’ academic and life skill needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
Education, Experience, Licensure:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or related field required, Masters’ degree preferred.
  • Work experience (i.e., minimum two years) providing educational/coaching/mentoring services to underrepresented populations (e.g., diverse cultural, ethnic, and economic background students with disabilities) required.

Physical Demands:

Normal physical demands for successful work in a normal office environment. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Ability to utilize hands for g eneral office work including typing, filing, answering telephones, and writing.
