About the Role
The Assistant Director will join the IslandQuest Day Camp team, guiding a group of campers to foster social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development within the camp environment.
Agency Expectations
- Support agency initiatives by carrying out assigned duties accurately and efficiently, following established processes, and contributing to basic data collection, reporting, or documentation.
- Use agency resources responsibly by following established procedures, safeguarding equipment and materials, and supporting cost‑effective operations.
- Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross‑department teams to ensure clear communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment.
- Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff, partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents.
Role Expectations
- Attend all monthly Leadership meetings, Group Leader training, and pre‑camp orientations (May29‑30, June7, June14, June28).
- Work all days Monday‑Friday 8:00am‑4:30pm, June29 – August21, and be reachable by phone until 6:30pm.
- Maintain up‑to‑date First Aid RTE and CPR Pro Certification before camp start.
- Help lead, supervise, and organize campers and staff during activities throughout the camp day.
- Follow and enforce all policies and guidelines outlined in the Island Quest Day Camp manual.
- Apply positive youth development principles, promoting communication, respect, inclusion, and camper engagement.
- Oversee daily operations, supervision, and organization of campers and staff across multiple groups in the division.
- Enforce camp policies and ensure compliance with health, safety, and DOH ratio requirements.
- Foster a positive, inclusive culture through strong communication, trust, and youth development principles.
- Support, coach, and evaluate Group Leaders and staff to promote a successful summer.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians and maintain required records, including incident reports.
- Model professionalism and safety, respond to emergencies, address camper needs, and ensure proper care of equipment and facilities.
Qualifications & Key Attributes
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of experience working with youth or in Youth Development.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
- 2–4 years of supervisory experience.
- Strong experience communicating and working with families and children of varying ages and abilities.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a Commonpoint role is a plus.
- Bilingual.
- Master’s degree in Education or related field.

Compensation & Benefits
Commonpoint offers competitive base salaries benchmarked against comparable nonprofit organizations in the New York metropolitan area. Salaries are determined based on internal and external equity, as well as each position’s scope, qualifications, and organizational impact. New hires typically start near the beginning of the salary range, with opportunities for growth based on performance, professional development, and tenure.
Working Conditions
Outdoors: walking, exposure to loud noise or extreme heat, essential physical requirements such as climbing, standing, stooping, or swimming. Late nights or overnight duties may be required. Bus transportation from local hubs offered.

Work schedule: Monday‑Friday 8:00am‑4:30pm, available by phone until 6:30pm during camp period (June29–Aug21). Non‑union position. In‑person role.
