Job description

Position Summary

The Assistant Detention Officer Supervisor is a vital position at the Marion County Youth Services Center, responsible for safeguarding the welfare of detained youths. This role ensures a secure, nurturing environment addressing the physical, emotional, and mental health needs of youth in custody. The individual collaborates closely with the Detention Officer Supervisor to manage daily operations, supervise Detention Officers and Senior Officers, enforce the Behavioral Management System, and ensure compliance with training protocols. In the absence of the Detention Officer Supervisor, Youth Services Administration, and Department Managers, the Assistant Detention Officer Supervisor assumes full responsibility for the facility's operations.

*This position is for second shift—generally 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.*

Position Responsibilities
  1. Support the facility technically and as a leader, performing technical and administrative tasks to support each security post.
  2. Serve as a trusted liaison and role model, fostering an atmosphere of care and concern for youth and staff safety.
  3. Organize, oversee, and distribute duties among employees to ensure efficient operation of the Center and/or the assigned Unit Team.
  4. Assist the Detention Officer Supervisor in ensuring facility compliance with standards and regulations.
  5. Review, report, and correct situations detrimental to safety or security, including scheduling contraband searches.
  6. Evaluate staff performance in conjunction with the Detention Officer Supervisor, developing improvement plans and tracking progress.
  7. Ensure employees follow policies, training, rules, and procedures, addressing non-compliance appropriately.
  8. Conduct new hire interviews to assess candidate qualifications and alignment with facility values.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent required; college preferred. Two years of experience in detention facilities, shelter care, corrections, or related human services strongly preferred. A good knowledge of the child welfare and juvenile justice system is essential.

This leadership role requires demonstrated leadership skills, professionalism, critical thinking, confidentiality, and strong communication skills. Ability to collaborate effectively, operate computer systems proficiently, and maintain strong boundaries with co-workers is essential. Flexibility to work any shift is required. Marion County residency is required within six months of hire. Salary enhancements are available for higher education and bilingual skills. Shift differential applies for second shift.
