Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

The New York State Unified Court System is seeking an Assistant Deputy Counsel (Workplace Violence Prevention) in the Office of Court Administration - Division of Human Resources in New York, NY.

The Workplace Violence Prevention (WVPP) Unit coordinates, monitors, and supports statewide initiatives and activities to prevent, assess, and respond to workplace violence across the Unified Court System, including ancillary court programs. The Unit provides specialized guidance to court managers, HR professionals, and administrative leadership on compliance with workplace violence laws, related regulations and standards, and internal policies. It also serves as the central administrative resource for the Unified Court System, incident reporting and recordkeeping, and follow up actions—promoting consistent workplace practices, clear documentation, and timely resolution. As a newly established Unit, its operational framework, procedures, and staffing model are in active development and the Assistant Deputy Counsel will lead these efforts.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate workplace violence prevention initiatives and activities across the Unified Court System, including ancillary court programs, to promote consistency, standardization, and compliance with applicable laws, required annual assessments, and internal policy requirements; report to and assist the Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WVPP) Committee Chair on the annual program review.
• Interpret workplace violence statutes, regulations, and case law; serve as the primary contact for complex workplace violence and safety matters requiring legal interpretation, documentation, and specialized analysis.
• Facilitate collaboration and engagement with organizational leaders and cross department stakeholders to advance safety goals and maintain hazard free workplaces.
• Provide expert legal and technical guidance to HR staff, managers, and administrators on recordkeeping, reporting procedures, safety protocols, and prevention plans.
• Lead statewide training, outreach, and communications—develop guidance and awareness materials; coordinate required training (including workplace safety, exposure control, and workplace violence prevention); and ensure accurate, inspection ready LMS records.
• Establish, maintain, and enhance policies, workflows, and response procedures as the Unit’s operational structure evolves; promote inclusive, data driven, evidence-based safety and violence prevention programming aligned with UCS’s mission.
• Develop and steward tracking systems, templates, and technological tools to strengthen multi-disciplinary monitoring and documentation of workplace safety and violence prevention matters.
• Prepare reports, summaries, and recommendations on incidents, trends, resource needs, and compliance issues to support stakeholder and leadership briefings.
• Supervise, onboard, and develop Unit staff.
• Some statewide travel may be required.
