Job summary

Marshall Public Schools is seeking an Assistant Cook to assist in preparing and serving nutritious meals for PK-13 students in a multi-building district.

Responsibilities include cashier duties during lunch, maintaining clean work areas, following sanitation guidelines, and supporting the head cook as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be organized and able to work with minimal supervision.
• Strong oral and listening communication skills.
• Safe operation of kitchen equipment and sanitation practices.
• Cooking and food service experience preferred.

NATURE OF POSITION:

The Assistant Cook assists in the preparation and serving of quality, nutritious and well accepted breakfast and/or lunch meals for students in a quick and pleasant matter as well as accurately and efficiently cashier for each lunch period. The Assistant Cook works cooperatively with others to provide students, staff and the community with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient environment; and maintains effective public relations with parents, staff, students and visitors.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Organized, self-disciplined and capable of performing job duties without constant supervision
• Strong communication (oral & listening) and interpersonal relations skills
• Ability to operate and maintain equipment necessary to perform the job in a safe manner
• Proficient cooking skills, food service experience preferred

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Complete daily work schedule and other duties as assigned by supervisor
• Assist head cook when needed
• Assist in preparation of foods in a way that will be pleasing to customers
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records
• Maintain a neat and clean work area
• Comply with State and Federal rules and regulations regarding the National School Lunch Program
• Make accurate cash sales/exchanges with customers
• Make accurate cash sales/exchanges with customers
• Notify driver or supervisor of any needed supplies
• Follow proper sanitation practices as determined by the County Health Department throughout meal preparation, service, and clean-up including cleaning equipment, lunch tables and food contact surfaces following proper sanitation techniques using approved sanitizing agents and handling and storing foods in a proper, sanitary manner
• Assist co-workers in setup and cleanup of cafeteria / kitchen
• Keep Director informed about any out of stock items, potential or existing unsafe working conditions, shortages or problems that require immediate action, and when assistance is needed to complete production within time constraints
• Demonstrate an understanding of the district's mission, vision and strategic priorities and actively works to advance them through daily practice and professional conduct
• Contribute to the culture and climate of the district by modeling its core values, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment and serving as a committed representative of the district's identity and purpose in all interactions with students, families, staff and the broader community
• Utilize extra time when work is completed ahead of schedule to assist others, clean, etc.
• Utilize work simplification techniques to complete work in a timely manner
• Service customers in a courteous, efficient manner
• Sweep and mop all floors in the kitchen area, as assigned
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

WORK YEAR:

School Year Calendar (up to 180 days)

SCHEDULE:

M-F 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM (2.5 hr/day; 12.5 hr/wk)

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The assistant cook will be under the direct supervision of the Food Service Director.
