Job summary

Allied Residential, based in Washington, seeks an experienced Assistant Controller to lead the property accounting function and supervise a team of property accountants. You will review monthly financials, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and owner reporting to ensure accuracy and timeliness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
• 5+ years progressive accounting experience, including property management accounting.
• Minimum 2 years of supervisory or team leadership experience.
• Strong experience with Yardi property management accounting software (required).
• Advanced Excel proficiency.
• Strong understanding of property management industry accrual and cash accounting.
• CPA preferred.
• Strong and clear professional communication skills, whether through email, virtually (Teams, Zoom) or in-person.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, train, and develop assigned property Accountants, with clear expectations for quality, deadlines, and accountability.
• Coordinate workload and backup coverage for PTO, vacancies, and peak close periods, stepping in directly as necessary.
• Support performance reviews, hiring, onboarding, and long-term development of the property accounting team.
• Review monthly property financial statements and owner reporting for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
• Review and assist with bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, allocations, and other key account activity.
• Ensure assigned properties meet monthly close deadlines and follow Allied accounting policies and client requirements.
• Provide hands-on accounting support and direct coverage for Property Accountants during PTO, vacancies, and workload spikes.
• Review and approve applicable funds transfers, property mortgage payments and owner distributions, reserve and security deposit activity, and other assigned cash transactions.
• Assist with management fee, billback, intercompany, payroll/reimbursable expense, and other property or corporate reconciliations as assigned.
• Serve as an accounting point of escalation for assigned properties and communicate with clients, Portfolio Managers, and property teams as needed.
• Support year-end close, CPA and audit requests, 1099s, tax filings, and other regulatory reporting under the direction of the Controller.
• Help document and enforce accounting procedures, internal controls, and appropriate segregation of duties.
• Serve as a hands-on resource for assigned accountants and property accounting workflows, including Yardi and related tools.
• Help maintain data integrity, consistent accounting setup, and appropriate user workflows.
• Identify and implement practical process improvements that make reporting more accurate, timely, and efficient.
