Base pay range

We are seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on Assistant Controller to support the financial operations of a property & casualty insurance company focused on homeowners coverage. This role plays a key part in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and efficient internal processes. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of statutory accounting principles (SAP), NAIC filings, and the unique financial dynamics of the homeowners insurance business—including reinsurance, claims reserves, and premium recognition.

We are seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on Assistant Controller to support the financial operations of a property & casualty insurance company focused on homeowners coverage. This role plays a key part in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and efficient internal processes. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of statutory accounting principles (SAP), NAIC filings, and the unique financial dynamics of the homeowners insurance business—including reinsurance, claims reserves, and premium recognition.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP and SAP, with a focus on homeowners P&C insurance operations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of NAIC quarterly and annual statements, including state-specific Department of Insurance (DOI) filings.
  • Support the statutory close process, including Schedule P (loss reserves), Schedule F (reinsurance), and analysis of loss development.
  • Manage premium accounting processes including earned/unearned premium recognition and policy acquisition cost deferrals.
  • Oversee claims reserving support, including collaboration with actuarial teams on IBNR and loss development analyses.
  • Coordinate with reinsurers and manage ceded reinsurance accounting, including premium cessions, recoverables, and true-up adjustments.
  • Assist with financial audits and examinations from regulators and third-party auditors.
  • Help develop and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures specific to the homeowners insurance product line.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, review journal entries and reconciliations, and support team training and development.
  • Assist with annual budget, financial forecasting, and variance analysis related to premiums, claims, and underwriting expenses.
Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a P&C insurance environment.
  • Solid understanding of homeowners insurance financial mechanics, including earned premium, loss ratios, claims reserves, and reinsurance.
  • Experience with NAIC reporting, statutory accounting, and regulatory compliance.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in accounting and insurance systems (e.g., Guidewire, One Inc., PolicyCenter, or other core insurance platforms).
  • Strong knowledge of Excel, financial modeling, and data reconciliation tools.
  • Familiarity with investment accounting and asset reporting a plus.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Preferred Competencies:
  • Knowledge of state homeowners insurance regulations, including catastrophe exposure and regulatory capital requirements.
  • Experience working with external auditors, actuaries, and regulators.
  • Ability to interpret and apply statutory guidance (SSAPs) for insurance-specific transactions.
Work Environment:
  • Hybrid or remote flexibility depending on company policy.
  • Occasional overtime required during peak financial close periods and audit preparation.
