Overview

A global multibillion dollar Asset Manager’s Real Estate Division is seeking an Assistant Controller. The position will be responsible for the funds’ financial reporting, operations, and accounting responsibilities along with implementing strategic initiatives, new product implementation, and operational streamlining.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the accounting, operations, and financial reporting functions for a real estate investment entity.
• Consolidate financial records from multiple property companies, ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
• Review property-level financials to ensure proper reporting and consolidation in accordance with GAAP.
• Manage the monthly close process, NAV calculations, and financial reporting to meet internal deadlines and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate financial data consolidation with third-party service providers.
• Advise internal teams on structuring subsidiary reporting to align with corporate reporting standards.
• Prepare technical accounting memos for new transactions and review legal documentation to ensure alignment with financial reporting.
• Lead the preparation of quarterly and annual GAAP financial statements, including SEC reporting requirements.
• Work with external partners on XBRL tagging for financial filings.
• Ensure timely internal and external reporting, supporting FP&A and corporate reporting needs.
• Collaborate with external auditors for annual audits and quarterly reviews.
• Identify and address SOX control deficiencies, working with external advisors to strengthen internal controls.
• Prepare management and board-level financial reports.
• Ensure compliance with corporate policies related to expense allocations and financial reporting.
• Partner with senior leadership across key business units (Investments, Accounting, Legal, Operations, Technology, and Tax) to support ongoing initiatives.
• Contribute to strategic initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency through process automation and technology adoption.
• Review fee structures, incentive allocations, and fund-related financial calculations.
• Assist in the valuation of investment properties.
• Monitor liquidity needs in collaboration with treasury and third-party administrators.
• Track credit facility usage and ensure compliance with debt covenant reporting.
• Oversee trade reconciliation and ensure accurate monthly NAV reporting.

Qualifications

Required:

• 8+ years of experience in real estate investment accounting, preferably within a REIT or real estate fund.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (MBA or advanced degree preferred).
• CPA certification required.
• Strong technical accounting background with a deep understanding of US GAAP and SEC financial reporting.
• Expertise in real estate accounting standards (ASC 805, ASC 810, ASC 842, ASC 360) and SOX compliance.
• Proven leadership experience in managing accounting functions.
• Proficiency in financial systems, spreadsheets, and reporting tools.
• Track record of optimizing financial operations and implementing process improvements.

Preferred:

• Experience with industry-specific accounting platforms such as Yardi.
• Familiarity with financial reporting tools like Workiva.
• Strong background in REIT-specific accounting and reporting.
