Overview

The Morgan Library & Museum ("the Morgan") invites applications for the position of Assistant Controller in the Financial Services Department. Reporting to the Controller, the position will play a critical role in the integrity and accuracy of the Morgan Library & Museum’s financial operations. This position is responsible for day-to-day, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting functions in a non-profit fund accounting environment, with particular emphasis on overseeing the operating accounts. Responsibilities include preparing general ledger entries, actively participating in the annual audit process, assisting with the monthly closing schedule, and, where possible, working with the Controller in maintaining and reporting on restricted funds, endowment, and investment balances. This position works extensively with other members of the Finance team and collaborates with staff from a wide range of other Morgan departments. An ideal candidate will have experience and passion for process improvement, implementing and leveraging new technology, and improving internal controls.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP.
  • Experience with monthly close and financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting nonprofit audits.
  • Ability to supervise staff while remaining hands‑on in accounting work.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Skill in financial analysis and reporting.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced skills with Microsoft Office Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software; MIP Abila preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in both written and verbal form. Must be highly organized and detail‑oriented.
  • Ability to allocate time efficiently. Advanced report writing a plus.
  • Collegial approach to work with an interest in the Morgan’s mission and programming.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience with increasing scope and responsibility in an endowment-supported nonprofit organization is required.
  • Hands‑on experience with investment journal entries, audits, and fund accounting.
  • Experience with regulatory and government filings, including IRS Form 990, 1099, 1042, and NY State Sales tax.
  • Experience in public accounting a plus.
Work Environment
  • Shared indoor office, which can be busy and noisy.
  • Indoor work, occasionally in a dusty environment.
Physical Requirements

Ability to work for extended periods at a computer workstation.

Ability to lift moderately heavy boxes, move items to and from shelves.

Compensation

$115,000 to $130,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits plan.
