Job Description: Assistant Controller
Concordis is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join the team of a client that is in the self-storage industry. This is a full-time role working on-site in Everett, WA.

Each property operates as its own entity, and our accounting team is part of the Support Center—a group dedicated to partnering closely with our operational teams to keep the business running smoothly. The Role
We’re looking for an Assistant Controller to join our collaborative accounting team in Everett, WA. You’ll work closely with the Controller and lead a talented group of professionals, including Accounting Managers, Property Accountants, Payroll and AP & Cash Reconciliation. Your focus will be on supporting the team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and partnering with our operational colleagues—from Store Managers to Regional and District Managers—to help the business thrive.

Position Summary
The Assistant Controller is a key leader within the accounting organization, supporting day-to-day accounting operations for a growing portfolio of over 160 properties, each maintained as a separate legal entity. This role partners closely with the Controller and accounting team to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting and a consistent 5-day close process.
Equally important, this role serves as a collaborative partner to the company’s operational teams. As part of the Support Center, the accounting team plays a vital role in supporting Regional, District, and Store Managers who are operating self-storage facilities and serving customers every day.

Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development (Primary Focus)
- Support, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals, including the following direct reports:
- AP & Cash Reconciliation Manager (direct report)
- Payroll Lead and Payroll Support (functional oversight)
- Build on an already strong culture of accountability, ownership, and collaboration
- Provide guidance, remove obstacles, and support team members in achieving their goals
- Partner with others on selection and hiring of new team members
- Lead onboarding and training of team members, while documenting, standardizing, and continuously improving training processes and tools
- Oversee individualized development plans and maintain overall accountability for team training and development
- Oversee and support the successful execution of a 5-day monthly close across 160+ entities
- Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Partner with team members to understand and explain variances
- Help maintain a smooth, well-coordinated close process across all functions
- Responsible for property accounting for a small portfolio of properties, providing firsthand engagement with systems, processes and workflows
Operational Accounting Oversight
- Provide oversight and support across core accounting functions, including:
- AP and Cash reconciliations
- Payroll processing and reporting
- Property-level accounting and financial reporting
- Oversee additional functional areas and accounting tasks including:
- WCSS Maintenance - program accounting & reporting
- Energy Use Compliance - implementation and reporting
- Intercompany Transactions
- Budgeting process – serve as administrator that owns the tracking, familiar with templates and reviews for process improvements
- Property and Liability Insurance – tracking coverage and quarterly reconciliation
- 1099 process
- Encourage consistency and shared best practices across the team
- Engage in both short-term and long-range planning for the accounting team, addressing immediate operational needs while shaping a forward-looking vision for team development and organizational growth
Systems & Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to enhance processes, scalability, and efficiency
- Support and optimize use of key systems: NetSuite, Avidxchange, Emburse, Paylocity
- Serve as an admin or team leader for systems and services as needed
- Participate in system implementations and workflow improvements
- Encourage thoughtful collaboration and continuous improvement within a flexible environment
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Support the maintenance of strong internal controls and consistent accounting practices
- Maintain awareness of current accounting standards, tax considerations, and regulatory or legal changes impacting self-storage management
- Ensure alignment with GAAP and company accounting policies
- Assist with periodic reviews or external requests as needed
- Help maintain clear and practical documentation of processes
Operational Partnership
- Build strong working relationships with operational team members, including Regional, District, and Store Managers
- Act as a responsive and supportive resource to field teams
- Communicate clearly and proactively to help operations understand financial information
- Contribute to a service-oriented culture that supports those closest to the customer
- Periodic travel required
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred)
- Prior experience leading and mentoring team members required
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Experience in multi-entity environments required; real estate or property management experience strongly preferred
- Collaborative leadership style with a focus on support and development
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
- Ability to manage and prioritize in a multi-entity, fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Systems-oriented mindset with interest in improving processes
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with ERP systems
