Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chicago is seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer to support roadway engineering across DOT, counties, and transportation projects. You will work with a multidisciplinary team on route planning studies, PS&E, and progressive design-build efforts.

Qualifications

• ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
• Prior internship or related consulting experience.
• Basic knowledge of standard civil engineering techniques.
• Familiarity with AASHTO design guidelines.
• Knowledge of transportation engineering software including Bentley MicroStation, InRoads and/or Geopak and OpenRoads.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Engineering in Training (EIT) preferred.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 strongly preferred.
• Campus or community involvement preferred.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Assist in civil design from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assist road design: horizontal/vertical alignments, typical sections, drainage and cost estimates.
• Research and compile project data as required by project managers.
• Assist with compiling studies and reports.
• Assist with client presentations, shop drawings, and contract administration.
• Assist in field inspections, measurements or calculations for clients.
• Perform other duties as assigned and comply with policies.
