Job summary

The City of Amarillo seeks an Assistant City Engineer to lead and manage public works design projects and infrastructure improvements. This role requires strong civil engineering knowledge and experience with GIS/CAD tools, budgeting, and interdepartmental collaboration.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, reviewing plans, and aiding in long-term infrastructure planning, with DOQ starting pay and competitive benefits. The position is based in Amarillo, TX and requires a PE license.

Qualifications

• Understanding and knowledge of civil engineering discipline.
• Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, etc.
• Ability to use technical software such as GIS or CAD.
• Ability to learn new software and improve processes.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to operate computers and basic office equipment.
• Ability to perform complex mathematical computations.
• Certified Floodplain Manager accreditation preferred.

Responsibilities

• Public Infrastructure Management: supervise staff in preparing plans for public works and infrastructure projects.
• Design and prepare projects including hydrological, hydraulic, street/storm sewer alignments, water and wastewater utilities.
• Review civil engineering components of projects from other divisions and consultants.
• Participate in infrastructure planning and prepare proposals.
• Develop cost estimates and assist in budget requests for future projects.
• Review development plans and provide design recommendations to city engineers.
