Job summary

The City of Walker is seeking an experienced Assistant City Engineer to lead public infrastructure projects across roads, bridges, parks and utilities. You will oversee design through construction, coordinate with MDOT and regional partners, and support long-range planning.

This full-time exempt role requires a PE license in Michigan (or ability to obtain within one year), strong leadership, and excellent communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • P.E. license in Michigan or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Strong knowledge of municipal engineering, infrastructure design, construction standards, and project management.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with elected officials, residents, consultants, contractors, and fellow team members.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Manage infrastructure planning for roads, bridges, sidewalks, trails, and stormwater systems.
  • Oversee public improvement projects from design through construction.
  • Collaborate with MDOT, Kent County, regional agencies, consultants, developers, and City leadership.
  • Assist the Planning Commission in guiding private development projects that shape Walker's future.
  • Recommend innovative engineering solutions and modern infrastructure improvements.
  • Support long-range planning that keeps our community growing responsibly.
  • Step into leadership by assisting with department operations and serving in the City Engineer's absence when needed.
  • Coordinating with Finance and Public Works on long-term infrastructure investments.
  • Preparing engineering reports and presenting recommendations to City Commission, Planning Commission, and other boards.
  • Assisting with grant applications and securing funding for future projects.
  • Building positive relationships with residents, contractors, developers, and regional agencies.
