Job summary

The City of Walker is seeking an experienced Assistant City Engineer to help shape roads, parks, utilities and transportation systems. You will lead infrastructure planning, oversee projects from design to construction, and collaborate with MDOT, regional partners and City leadership to deliver critical public improvements.

Qualifications include a Civil Engineering degree, Michigan P.E. licensure within one year, and strong communication and project management skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• P.E. license in Michigan or ability to obtain within one year.
• Strong knowledge of municipal engineering principles, infrastructure design, construction standards.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
• Ability to work with elected officials, residents, consultants, contractors, and team members.
• Valid Michigan driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Manage infrastructure planning for roads, bridges, sidewalks, trails, and stormwater systems.
• Oversee public improvement projects from design through construction.
• Collaborate with MDOT, Kent County, regional agencies, consultants, developers, and City leadership.
• Assist the Planning Commission in guiding private development projects that shape Walker's future.
• Recommend engineering solutions and modern infrastructure improvements.
• Support long-range planning and coordinate with Finance and Public Works on investments.
• Prepare engineering reports and present recommendations to City Commission and Planning Commission.
• Assist with grant applications and securing funding for future projects.
