Job description

TheAssistant Branch Manager leads a team of Supervisors and Associates to execute the company’s mission: to inspire and empower building professionals, designers, and homeowners through exceptional products, experiences, and unmatched customer service. This also includes delivering sales and margin results that meet or exceed the budget by managing the product assortment and visual presentation; leading the selling and service within the branch; and coordinating home or job site deliveries that are on-time and in-full.

Responsibilities specific to the Assistant Branch Manager:

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, train, coach, develop, and retain top talent. Provide new hire training, product knowledge training, sales training and safety training for all branch employees.
  • Plan and assign workload to direct reports based on customer impact, job priority, and complexity.
  • Follow-up on assigned workload to ensure completion by overcoming obstacles and adjusting direction.
  • Lead a customer-focused branch culture by demonstrating, training, observing, coaching and requiring selling and service behaviors.
  • Lead a selling culture that seeks to understand customer needs; then provides innovative products and industry expertise to meet or exceed those needs while limiting returns, discounts and expenses.
  • Execute in-store and online marketing strategy. Ensure all signage and product marketing is correctly placed throughout the branch.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Lead the branch team in the execution of visual merchandising and presentation standards that include branch cleanliness, accurate product placement using planograms and/or product shelf labels, correct signage and in-store marketing. Execute Planograms and product layouts that communicate value and a Brand message to customers while maximizing sales/sq. ft.
  • Lead the branch team in the consistent replenishment of all available products to ensure all departments remain in-stock for our customers. This includes just-in-time weekly ordering, sorting and replenishment from weekly freight deliveries and replenishment from overhead/backstock/warehouse.
  • Maintain pricing and inventory accuracy through partnership with the Inventory Control Manager.
  • Ensure customer delivery needs are scheduled and delivered on-time and in-full by collaborating with Sales Representatives, directing the lumber yard team to prepare orders and managing dispatch.
  • Manage payroll within allocated budget by adjusting hourly employee schedules according to sales forecasts and results. Ensure employee timecards and PTO requests are reviewed and updated weekly.

  • Establish a culture of accountability through clear expectations, routines, and Performance Management.
  • Develop and coach the team to elevate their expertise and increase team productivity. Provide meaningful, timely, consistent feedback based on the situation, the behaviors observed and their business impact. Deliver annual performance reviews that are consistent with this feedback.
  • Plan for, manage and follow-up on organizational and operational change.
  • Maintain a positive, productive work environment through friendly, respectful relationships with customers & co-workers. Demonstrate enthusiasm to greet customers anywhere on company property or job sites.
  • Support, elevate, and engage the community through company events and local partnerships.
  • Execution of daily operational duties including Branch Opening & Closing Responsibilities, cash control responsibilities, product organization and store cleanliness.
  • Champion a culture of safety and compliance. Ensure all employees adhere to all laws, OSHA standards, and company policies & procedures. Observe the team and immediately correct any unsafe behavior or unsafe conditions. Investigate, address, and mitigate the root causes of hazards or unsafe conditions. Report all issues regarding safety, waste, damage, equipment, accidents or customer concerns promptly to the COO of Northeast.
  • Keep all machinery, equipment, and tools clean and in good working order for safe usage.
  • Inform the COO of Northeast promptly of suspected inventory shortage.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in retail leadership, and/or building materials distribution – Minimum of 4 years.
  • Holds self and others accountable to the required actions of each position.
