Job description

Position Summary:

The Assistant Athletic Director / Head Softball Coach of Mount Mary University's NAIA programs is an integral member of the Athletic Department at Mount Mary University and requires an enthusiastic, pro-active, high-energy individual who is determined to see that the Athletics Department and Softball program's roster and success goals are met. The primary roles of the Assistant Athletic Director will consist of liaising athletic rentals with the university Facilities and Events Coordinator, oversee MMU athletic home game-day event management/operations/coordination for assigned sport program(s), heading athletic facilities supervision and advise the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The primary function of the athletic facilities supervisor position is responsible for the Bloechl Center building and seeing that all surrounding outdoor athletic fields are maintained at a high standard (coordinating maintenance with the Buildings & Grounds team); and is responsible for meeting the rental event operation needs in the Bloechl Center and surrounding outdoor athletic fields (working with the Facilities and Events Coordinator). Additionally, as part of their Assistant Athletic Director responsibilities they will collaborate within the Athletics senior leadership team to maintain and strengthen the athletics department in the areas of budgeting, revenue, recruiting, retention and development. This individual must be committed to the NAIA values through "Character-driven Athletics" where MMU athletics staff embody and teach integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership on and off the field, in addition to the MMU Athletic Department pillars to "Recruit, Retain, and Develop".

The Assistant Athletic Director / Head Softball Coach works primarily with the athletics staff, coaches, student-athletes, student workers, admissions staff, faculty and other administrative offices to ensure that each Mount Mary University student-athlete and prospective student-athlete receives a quality experience. This opportunity requires the availability to work a variable schedule. Hours will be determined by mutual agreement with the Director of Athletics and/or Associate Director of Athletics and work to best accommodate the needs of the Softball program, along with the Athletics Department. Pre/post season hours likely to be slightly more consistent than in-season hours. Work schedule can vary during peak sports seasons.

Primary Responsibilities:

Assistant Athletic Director

  • Participate in the Athletics senior leadership team within the Athletic Department. To include the support of the Mount Mary University mission and the philosophy of NAIA athletics
  • Assist in budget planning, fundraising and development activities in collaboration with the Department of Alumnae and Donor Relations (note: all fundraising is to be administered in collaboration with that department)
  • Assist in compliance with all NAIA regulations (including but not limited to) academic, drug, tobacco, alcohol use, amateurism, and scheduling regulations, reporting any possible infraction to the Director of Athletics and/or Associate Director of Athletics
  • Work with the university Facilities and Events Coordinator on scheduling athletic rentals in the athletics spaces; this includes the Bloechl Center and surrounding outdoor athletic fields
  • Advise the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), by attending bi-monthly meetings and guiding efforts to organize fundraising, community service and hospitality events
  • Sport supervision over assigned sport program(s)
  • Oversee the athletic facilities supervision - administer the maintenance of the Bloechl Center, a 25,000 square foot on-campus athletic/recreational facility that includes a full-size gymnasium, Athletic Training room, locker rooms, LCR, and concessions along with surrounding outdoor athletic fields
  • Perform other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or Associate Director of Athletics, including emergency tasks as needed

Head Softball Coach

  • Recruitment - coordinate recruiting efforts to meet agreed upon benchmarks to ensure the softball program is playing and practicing at or above the ideal number of student-athletes. Provide monthly recruiting updates to the Director of Athletics and/or Associate Director of Athletics along with the Admissions team
  • Manage annual softball athletic scholarship budget and athletic scholarship offers
  • Prepare and conduct all practice and competition plans
  • Follow budget guidelines set forth by the Director of Athletics and reconcile credit card statements on a monthly basis
  • Attend staff, admissions, athletic conference, and/or institution meetings / events when required
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate assistant coaching staff including a team manager, and assigned sport program coach if applicable
  • Perform other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or Associate Director of Athletics

Skills and Experience:

  • Coaching experience - 2-5 years required. Head Coaching experience preferred
  • Collegiate-level coaching experience preferred, at the NAIA level desired
  • Strong organizational, leadership, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, ability to work independently, and possess a high level of confidentiality
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups, facilitate group process, and foster collaborative decision making
  • Exceptional ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and extraordinary attention to detail
  • Computer skills are required, along with the expectation to learn additional computer software programs for Athletics; such as PrestoSports, Front Rush, Slate, Jenzabar, Hudl, scouting / film breakdown software, and a variety of recruiting sites

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree preferred - in field of Sport Management/Administration desired
  • Applicant must pass background check and motor vehicle records authorization
  • The individual will become familiar with athletic department program's recruiting software and digital tools along with admissions software; i.e. Slate and Jenzabar
  • Candidate needs to feel confident talking on a phone and creating coherent, professional correspondences (emails, letters, text messages, etc.)

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to Lift/Carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must reach, bend, stoop, lift
  • Must sit, walk or stand for long periods of time

  • Work schedule can vary, especially during peak sports seasons
